Ian McKellen as the wizard Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings: the Fellowship of the Ring
Sir Ian McKellen may be in the midst of filming one of the most anticipated films of the year (Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit
), but that won’t be all he’s doing during his time in New Zealand.
The critically acclaimed actor who starred in the Lord of the Rings
trilogy as the wizard Gandalf, has announced that he will be touring New Zealand to raise funds for the restoration of Christchurch’s 104-year-old Isaac Theatre Royal.
McKellen will visit 11 different venues across New Zealand for the very special show, ‘Ian McKellen on Stage,’ where the audience will have the opportunity to interact with the famous actor as he shares his experiences on life, acting, Tolkien, Hollywood, Shakespeare and much more.
"The last time I was on stage in New Zealand was at the Isaac Theatre Royal in Waiting for Godot," he said
"I love this beautiful old theatre and want to help restore it as soon as possible."
Due to popular demand, the show will run for two nights in Christchurch, in addition to many other shows across New Zealand including Stratford, Palmerston North, Hamilton, Tauranga, Nelson, Auckland, Lake Wanaka, Hastings, Wellington and Carterton during May and June.
ASB Bank is supporting the event, and has agreed to donate all proceeds to the existing fund that will go towards repairing the Christchurch theatre.
"We are delighted to host Sir Ian at The Court," Chief Executive of The Court Theatre Philip Aldridge said
"While we continue to fundraise for the theatre in Addington, we are thrilled to be able to contribute towards the rebuild of the Isaac Theatre Royal."
The actor, who has such a huge range of experience under his belt, will discuss the career which has allowed him to travel from England’s north to London’s West End stage, to the silver screen of Hollywood and, of course, to Middle Earth.
The first half of the show will feature the actor focusing on his work in The Lord of the Rings
and The Hobbit
adaptations, followed by a short question and answer session with audience members.
The second half of the show will allow the actor to expand on the other roles of his career, featuring the occasional speech and soliloquy.
Finally, audience members will help to conclude the show by playing dead French soldiers while McKellen delivers a thrilling final speech, bringing his show to its ultimate close.
As the actor himself puts it
, ‘Basically it will be a party. Do come!’
Tickets for ‘Ian McKellen on Stage’ are already on sale, and cost approximately $50 for adults and $25 for students/children. Further details regarding the tour can be found on the actor’s official website
