Harry Houdini’s life was a mystery, and his greatest trick remains his ability to escape interpretation. Now the man who believed he could return from the dead will be resurrected by Proteus Theatre to tell his remarkable story in Houdini at Square Chapel on Friday 29 October.

Houdini was an enigma in his own time and the mysterious circumstances of his premature death have launched numerous conspiracy theories that linger to this day. Houdini’s talent, coupled with the mystery that surrounded him during his life and increased since his death, has made him an intriguing character. Many films have been made about the man and most are riddled with inaccuracies.

The truth is that Houdini’s life is far more interesting than any fiction writer could have made it. With this in mind Proteus Theatre wanted this play to be an accurate account as well as entertaining. With much research and the assistance of Roy Davenport from Davenport Magic (whose great-great-grandfather, also a magician, knew Houdini), Proteus will show you the truth in this critically acclaimed play.

He has paved the way for every magician since his death and this multi award winning theatre company will explore his tricks and escapology spectacles which have inspired many modern day performers; David Blane truly tested the limits of the human body when he followed in Houdini’s footsteps and was buried alive; Derren Brown has built upon Houdini’s work of exposing fake mediums.

Using Proteus' distinctive style of fusing physical performance, circus, magic escapology and music they unveil a story of a truly self-made man and the myths that have made him a legend.

Anyone 25 and under can also enjoy this show for free. As part of the A Night Less Ordinary free ticket initiative Square Chapel is giving away tickets for anyone under 26. Just ask at the Box Office on 01422 349422 or email info@squarechapel.co.uk.
